This is a novella combining history (20th century) with Jewish paranormal folklore, so an interesting mix for me.
In case you missed it, In Victrix is now available! Come join Felix on his latest adventure, a tales of Races, Curses, and Forbidden Places!
What to Expect
A short read, from the point of view of an aging professor assisting a former student trace her family’s connections and a cross-generational curse. Considering the student had died in a car crash some time ago, there are some obvious complications.
The story is steeped in Yiddish lore and Jewish history across the tumultuous world wars.
What I liked
I liked the non-typical setting of using Jewish (specifically Eastern European) folklore, which one doesn’t see too often in modern literature outside of this niche.
The characters are warm and all too human, suspending their disbelief in search of family roots.
What to be aware of
This isn’t a ‘ghost story’ in the horror or usual paranormal sense, but rather a benign apparition. It reads more like tracing a genealogical tracing of ancestry than any supernatural drama.
Jack’s Review
I let Jack read this (the protagonist from the new series; I figured he’d understand it better than Felix). He notes were that he enjoyed all the historical research, something he does quite often when chasing down ghosts. The Yiddish terms made him laugh out loud, and he said it reminded him of his grandfather’s twisted humour.
Summary
Recommended if you’d enjoy a more literary magical realism, exploring some of the traumas of the Eastern European Jewry across the 20th century.
Enjoying the reviews, but wondering who the heck is that Felix fellow? Glad you asked! He’s the protagonist of the Togas, Daggers, and Magic series, an historical-fantasy blend of a paranormal detective on the background of ancient Rome.
Jack, however, is the protagonist of the new series — Unusual Crimes Squad. An introductory flash-fiction with him will be published on the mailing list shortly! Subscribe to make sure you don’t miss it.
